Easy songs to play online

Our own single-voice teaching arrangements of old melodies, without lyrics. Each page includes a playable instrument, notes and rhythm guidance. Xylophone versions sound one octave higher; kalimba versions fit 17 tines in C.

How to use it

  1. Listen to the example, slow the tempo and practise a phrase. The exercise checks pitches and lets you repeat your chosen section.
Help and explanations

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

Six phrases of seven notes. The third and fourth are identical, then the opening returns. Hold the last note of each phrase for two beats.

Ode to Joy

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

Beethoven’s opening theme in C major. Compare the endings: the first half ends on D, while the second resolves to C. Each dotted rhythm lasts one and a half beats followed by half a beat.

Frère Jacques

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

Every phrase appears twice. This version is in G major without using F sharp: its low D and high E fit a 17-tine kalimba. The G–D–G leap closes the tune.

Mary Had a Little Lamb

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

Start with E–D–C–D. Repeated notes need separate attacks: release and play again without rushing. The final C lasts four beats in this version.

Hot Cross Buns

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

Only three pitches are needed: E, D and C. Start with long notes; the middle has four shorter Cs and four shorter Ds. Count durations as well as notes.

London Bridge

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

The opening G–A–G–F has a longer first G and a short A. Practise that difference before joining the four phrases. The ending drops from E to C and rests.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

A single-voice C-major version with a 6/8 lilt. The tempo unit here is a quarter note: each bar totals three units, grouped as two sets of three eighth notes. The twelve short notes descend through C, G, E and C.

Au clair de la lune

Piano · Xylophone · Kalimba

The opening section repeated, using only C, D and E. Separate the three opening Cs; the following E and D last two beats each. Pay attention to the C–E leap.
