Online Piano: Virtual Piano Keyboard
This online piano plays right in your browser. On a phone, use one or several fingers at once to play chords; on a computer, use the mouse or the letters on your keyboard, like a musical keyboard. Each key can show the note name in letters (C D E) or in solfège (Do Re Mi), the computer key that plays it, or nothing at all.
How to use it
- Tap the keys. On a computer, the letters Z X C V B N M and Q W E R T Y U are the white keys; S D G H J and 2 3 5 6 7 are the black keys.
- Hold the space bar (or switch on the Pedal button) so the notes keep ringing after you release the key.
- Use the octave buttons or the arrow keys to change octave. With the phone held sideways you get three octaves; on a wide screen, four.
- Tap Record, play, then tap again to stop. Then use Play, MIDI, WAV or Share.
- Under Chord or scale, pick for example Major scale with root D: the keys of the scale light up and the root is highlighted.
Help and explanations
The sound is generated on your device, with a sustain pedal, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. You can record, download as MIDI or WAV, share by link, light up the keys of a chord or scale, and practise note names in a challenge.
How your computer keyboard becomes a piano
The keys follow their physical position, so the layout works the same on US, UK and other keyboards. The bottom row (Z to M) is one octave and the top row (Q to U) is the next one; the row just above each of them plays the black keys, in the same pattern as a real piano. That gives you two and a half octaves without moving your hands. To see which letter plays which note, choose Computer keyboard shortcuts under the key labels.
Record, download as MIDI and share
The recording stores the notes and the timing of each one, not the audio. That is why the MIDI file is tiny and editable: open it in MuseScore to see the sheet music, or in a DAW to change the instrument. The WAV is the sound of this piano, ready to send on WhatsApp or drop into a video. The share link carries the notes inside the address itself: whoever opens it hears what you played, with no account and nothing stored on a server.
MIDI keyboard and real piano
In Chrome, Edge and Opera, on a computer or on Android, a controller keyboard plugged in by USB works here: tap MIDI keyboard and allow access. Velocity and the keyboard's own sustain pedal are respected. On iPhone and in Safari, websites still have no access to MIDI.
The Challenge: play the note asks for a note and you play it on screen, on your computer keyboard or on your own piano; with the microphone on, the page checks it by sound. The audio is analysed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.
Tips
- To learn the note names, play the challenge with Show the key switched on; once you get them right without looking, switch it off.
- C is always the white key just to the left of the pair of black keys. Middle C is C4.
- With the pedal down, notes blend together: release and press it again on every chord change so the sound stays clean.
- In the microphone challenge, play one note at a time and let it ring: chords and background noise confuse the detection.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play the online piano with my computer keyboard?
The letters become keys: Z X C V B N M play C D E F G A B in one octave and Q W E R T Y U play the octave above. The black keys sit on the row just above: S D G H J and 2 3 5 6 7. The space bar is the pedal and the arrow keys change octave.
Are there easy songs to play on the online piano?
Start with well-known public-domain tunes that use only white keys. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: C C G G A A G, F F E E D D C, which on the computer keyboard is Q Q T T Y Y T, R R E E W W Q. Mary Had a Little Lamb and Hot Cross Buns also fit within one octave.
Does the online piano work on a phone?
Yes. Play with several fingers at once for chords and slide a finger across the keys for a glissando. Held upright, the phone shows two octaves; sideways, three. The full-screen button makes the keyboard bigger.
Can I record and download as MIDI?
Yes. Tap Record, play and stop. The MIDI button downloads a .mid file that opens in MuseScore, GarageBand, FL Studio or any music program; the WAV button downloads the finished audio.
What is the piano pedal for?
The sustain pedal, the right-hand one on an acoustic piano, lifts the dampers: the note keeps ringing after you release the key. Here it lives on the space bar and on the Pedal button.
What is the difference between a piano and a keyboard?
An acoustic piano has 88 weighted keys and the sound of hammered strings; a musical keyboard usually has 61 light keys and many different sounds. For learning the notes, chords and your first melodies, both work just as well.
