5-string ukulele tuner
This setting is for a five-string ukulele with four courses: a doubled G course followed by single C, E and A strings. The G pair contains G3 and G4, one octave apart. Its five physical strings therefore use G3, G4, C4, E4 and A4.
String notes and frequencies
Five-string ukulele tuning, standard doubled G — G3 + G4, C4, E4, A4 (5 strings in 4 courses): G3+G4 C4 E4 A4, from 196.00 Hz to 440.00 Hz, with A4 = 440 Hz.
| String | Note | Frequency (Hz) |
|---|---|---|
| Pair 4 | G3 + G4 | 196.00 + 392.00 |
| String 3 | C4 | 261.63 |
| String 2 | E4 | 329.63 |
| String 1 | A4 | 440.00 |
How to use it
- Confirm that your instrument has a doubled G course. The thicker or wound G string is the lower G3; the thinner partner is G4.
- Press Turn on microphone and allow microphone access. Select the G-pair card and mute its thin partner while you pluck the low G.
- Tune the lower partner to G3, then mute it and tune the higher partner to G4. The selected pair recognizes both targets and displays the octave.
- Select and tune C4, E4 and A4 one at a time. Recheck the G pair after the other strings settle.
- For a reference, select a card and press Play. The G card plays the pair’s references; let playback stop before measuring.
Help and explanations
Kala documents this low-G/high-G arrangement. It combines the two G registers while keeping the usual G C E A chord shapes. A five-string model with a doubled C course or a different string set needs a different configuration; use the chromatic tuner for those instruments.
Five strings, four courses
A course is a group of strings played together. Here the fourth course has two strings, while courses 3, 2 and 1 each have one. That is why this tuner has four cards rather than five: the G card tracks both G3 (196.00 Hz) and G4 (392.00 Hz).
C4 is 261.63 Hz, E4 is 329.63 Hz and A4 is 440.00 Hz at the default reference. The physical order of the two G strings can depend on the model; identify them by their gauge and intended pitch instead of assuming a left or right position.
Avoid an octave mistake on the low G
Do not tighten the thick G3 string until it reaches G4. The two notes share a letter but differ by an octave. Mute the other string of the pair so the tuner can follow the one you are adjusting.
This page is not a five-string bass ukulele, banjo or baritone preset. Check the maker’s string chart if your instrument does not match the doubled-G layout.
Tips
- Tune each member of the G pair separately before strumming both together.
- A reference tone may be picked up by the microphone: wait until it stops before taking a reading.
- Check both G strings again after fitting new strings; they can settle at different rates.
Frequently asked questions
What is five-string ukulele tuning?
For the doubled-G layout supported here: G3 + G4, C4, E4, A4. The two G strings share a course and are tuned one octave apart.
Why are there only four string cards?
There are four courses and five physical strings. The G card represents two strings, with separate G3 and G4 targets.
Does this work for every five-string ukulele?
It supports the low-G/high-G arrangement documented by Kala. Other five-string layouts, including doubled C or baritone models, require their own string chart.
Do I need to install an app?
No. The tuner runs in your browser. Microphone audio is analyzed on your device without recording or uploading.
