This ukulele tuner hears through your microphone which string you played and shows whether it's flat or sharp. Standard tuning, G C E A, is the same on soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles; only the size of the instrument changes.
It also covers low G, baritone (D G B E) and the D tuning (A D F♯ B) found in older songbooks. There's nothing to install, and the sound never leaves your device.
How to use it
- Tap Turn on microphone and allow access.
- Check the Tuning: Standard fits almost every soprano, concert and tenor uke.
- Play an open string and let it ring. The string lights up and the needle shows how far off it is.
- Up arrow (↑): tighten the tuning peg. Down arrow (↓): loosen it. After a second in the green, the string gets a ✓.
- Tap a string's button to hear its note; the tuner stays locked on it until you tap Auto.
Why the G string is higher
On a traditional ukulele the 4th string (the one nearest your face) is a high G, above the C and E next to it. This is called re-entrant tuning, and it gives uke chords their bright, close sound. From the 4th string to the 1st: G4, C4, E4 and A4 (392, 261.6, 329.6 and 440 Hz), the notes of the old "My Dog Has Fleas" tune. With low G, the 4th string is a thicker string tuned an octave lower, for a fuller bass when you play melodies.
Baritone, D tuning and the cavaquinho
The baritone ukulele is tuned like the top four guitar strings: D G B E. D tuning raises standard tuning a whole step (A D F♯ B) for a brighter soprano. The Brazilian cavaquinho looks like a ukulele but has steel strings tuned D G B D; for it, use the cavaquinho tuner.
Tips
- New ukulele strings stretch a lot: for the first few days, tune every time you pick the uke up.
- Strum with the pad of your thumb where the neck meets the body: the tone is fuller and the reading steadier.
- Ukuleles are quiet; hold yours close to the mic and away from fans or the TV.
- Always tune up to the note, never down to it.
Frequently asked questions
What are the ukulele string notes?
From the 4th string to the 1st: G, C, E and A (GCEA). The 4th is a high G, higher than the 3rd string.
How do I tune a ukulele as a beginner?
Open this page, turn on the microphone and pluck one string at a time. Follow the arrow until it turns green, then move to the next. Sing "My Dog Has Fleas" to remember the notes.
What is the difference between high G and low G tuning?
Both use G C E A. In high G (standard, re-entrant) the 4th string is above the C; in low G it's a thicker string an octave lower, which extends the range downward. Choose Low G in the menu.
How do I tune a baritone ukulele?
Choose Baritone and tune to D G B E, the same notes as the four highest guitar strings.
Can I tune a ukulele without a tuner?
Yes, by ear: tune the A string to a reference, then fret the E string at the 5th fret to match the A, the C string at the 4th fret to match the E, and the G string at the 2nd fret to match the A. Tap any string's button here to hear its reference note.
Why won't my ukulele stay in tune?
New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch a lot during the first week. Tune, gently pull each string away from the fretboard, tune again and repeat until it settles.
Do soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning?
Yes, all three use G C E A, and tenors are often strung with low G. Only the baritone is different: D G B E. Searching for a "ukelele" tuner? Same instrument, same tuning.
