Online glockenspiel with guided melodies

Try a melody on bright metal bars with this online glockenspiel. The virtual instrument covers three octaves of sounding pitches, C5 to C8. Small screens show one octave at a time so the bars are easier to tap; the arrows take you through the rest of the range.

How to use it

  1. Tap a bar or click it with the mouse. Natural notes are in the front row; accidentals sit behind them.
  2. Choose note labels or computer-key labels. Z S X D C V G B H N J M cover twelve chromatic notes, and Q begins the next mapped octave.
  3. Open Learn melodies and choose an exercise. Listen to the example, then select Play along and play each highlighted bar.
  4. Use the section selectors to work on a shorter phrase. Repeat section loops the example until you stop it.
  5. For a free performance, select Record, play and finish recording. You can then replay it, export MIDI or WAV, or share its note sequence by link.
Help and explanations

A struck bar keeps ringing after your finger lifts. Audio is synthesized on your device rather than taken from a recording of a commercial model. Play freely, follow highlighted notes in a guided melody, listen to an example, or record your own performance for MIDI and WAV export.

Metal bars and wooden bars sound different

A metallophone has metal bars; a glockenspiel is a bright, high-register member of that family. A xylophone uses wooden bars and has a different attack and decay. The silver bars on this page distinguish the metal instrument from Lalatone’s wooden-bar version.

School metallophones come in different ranges and layouts. This virtual model is chromatic, with 37 sounding notes. Check your classroom instrument’s range before moving a lesson to another octave.

Sounding pitch and written pitch

The displayed octave and exported MIDI note describe the sound you hear. Orchestral glockenspiel parts are commonly written two octaves below their sounding pitch. Under that convention, a written C4 corresponds to C6 on this page.

The Yamaha concert glockenspiel manual illustrates physical instrument ranges. C5–C8 is the virtual range used here; this tool does not reproduce a particular model’s complete range or tuning curve.

Send a lesson or challenge

In Lesson mode, enter notes with octave numbers, such as C6 D6 E6, and create a link and QR code. A recipient opens the prepared exercise without an account. After completing a practice exercise, Challenge a friend shares the same sequence and your score. Your own attempt history stays on this device and can be cleared in its panel.

Tips

  • Keep the volume modest: the register is high.
  • Listen to a short phrase before trying the full melody.
  • Guided-practice points measure note accuracy, not rhythmic expression or performance quality.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app?

No. Play in a phone or computer browser. Playing and recording a performance does not require a microphone; capture is optional in the separate note-recognition challenge for a physical instrument.

What is the virtual glockenspiel’s range?

C5 to C8 in sounding pitch, with 37 chromatic notes. The screen shows a portion of that range when space is limited; use the arrows to move.

Are these recordings of real bars?

No. The metallic sound is synthesized on your device. Practising mallet technique and physical damping still requires a real instrument.

Can I save a performance?

Yes. Export a free recording as MIDI or WAV, or share its note sequence by link. Exercise results are stored separately in the local history.
