Help and explanations

The menu also supplies A standard, A1 D2 G2 C3 E3 A3, and drop A, A1 E2 A2 D3 F♯3 B3. Those two A tunings are different: A standard lowers all six B-standard strings a whole step, while drop A lowers only the sixth.

A low B does not make every instrument the same

A six-string baritone in B standard has F♯3 on its second string from the treble end. A standard seven-string instead adds B1 below E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4. Both reach low B, but their remaining targets and chord shapes differ. Choose the seven-string guitar tuner for that layout.

A Bass VI normally runs E1 A1 D2 G2 B2 E3, a different six-string register. This baritone page does not substitute for its tuning. Follow your guitar’s intended scale, strings and setup when choosing B or A. If a low string reads sharp immediately after a heavy pick stroke, allow the sound to settle and compare a lighter attack before loosening it. A correct open note also does not guarantee correct fretted intonation; check that separately after a string or tuning change.

Tips

  • Read the second string as F♯3 in B standard, not G3.
  • Keep the other strings muted while measuring the low B or A.
  • Select A standard or drop A deliberately; the upper five targets are different.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard baritone guitar tuning?

B1 E2 A2 D3 F♯3 B3 is a common six-string baritone tuning. It is a fourth below standard guitar.

What is A-standard baritone tuning?

A1 D2 G2 C3 E3 A3, from sixth string to first. Use strings and a setup suitable for that register.

Is A standard the same as drop A?

No. Six-string drop A here is A1 E2 A2 D3 F♯3 B3, whereas A standard is A1 D2 G2 C3 E3 A3.

Is a baritone guitar the same as a seven-string guitar?

No. This page covers six strings with the standard interval pattern shifted lower. A standard seven-string retains the usual six guitar strings and adds low B.

Can I tune a normal guitar to B standard?

Pitch targets alone do not establish a usable setup. Check scale length, string gauges, nut and intonation with the maker or a guitar technician.

Why does my low string jump sharp when picked?

A forceful attack can raise the initial pitch. Mute the other strings, pick more gently and judge the sustained reading.
