Ichigoichie tuner

The ichigoichie has four strings, identified by K.Yairi as あ, い, う and え. Basic, Niraï and current Kanai models start in G2 D3 G3 D4. The first target is the low G, not the G an octave higher.

String notes and frequencies

Ichigoichie tuning, standard G — Basic / Niraï / current Kanai (4 strings): G2 D3 G3 D4, from 98.00 Hz to 293.66 Hz, with A4 = 440 Hz.

How to use it

  1. Choose Standard G for Basic, Niraï and current Kanai. Choose the older Kanai C setting only with the matching older string set.
  2. Press Turn on microphone and allow microphone access. Pluck an open string without touching a fret and mute the other three.
  3. Select the matching あ, い, う or え card. Match both the note and octave; adjust the peg slowly until the reading settles near zero cents.
  4. Work through all four strings, then check them again. Select a card and press Play for a reference tone; let it stop before measuring.
Help and explanations

This tuner follows the maker’s tuning instructions. Choose your model, select one string and compare its pitch through the microphone. You can also select a string and press Play to hear its reference before playing.

Basic, Niraï and current Kanai: G2 D3 G3 D4

From あ to え, the intervals are a fifth, a fourth and a fifth. K.Yairi’s check by frets is: fret 7 on あ matches open い; fret 5 on い matches open う; fret 7 on う matches open え.

The maker permits F through A for the first string on these models. The F and A settings preserve the same intervals. Use only a pitch and string set appropriate to your instrument.

Older Kanai: check the string set before choosing C

K.Yairi distinguishes older Kanai (奏生) string sets, whose basic first-string note is C, from current Kanai, whose basic note is G. The older C setting here is C3 G3 C4 G4. Do not use it just because the instrument says Kanai: confirm the model and fitted strings first.

The octave comes from the maker’s explicit reference: when あ is tuned to A, it is A2 = 110 Hz, two octaves below A4. Current standard G is therefore G2, approximately 98 Hz.

Tips

  • Mute unused strings so an overtone does not mask the string you are checking.
  • Keep the microphone close to the instrument without touching its body.
  • Match the reference A with your ensemble; the page starts at A4 = 440 Hz.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard ichigoichie tuning?

For Basic, Niraï and current Kanai: あ = G2, い = D3, う = G3 and え = D4. Older Kanai string sets use C3 G3 C4 G4.

Is the first G string G2 or G3?

It is G2 in the standard G setting. The next G string, う, is G3. The octave number matters even though both notes are called G.

Can I use this tuner without installing an app?

Yes. Open it in a browser and allow the microphone. Audio is analyzed on your device without recording or uploading.
