How to use it

  1. Allow the microphone and set the reference pitch agreed with your ensemble.
  2. Bow the inner string alone, with the left hand clear and no vibrato.
  3. Read the steady D4 after the start of the bow stroke.
  4. Adjust in small steps, then repeat on the outer A4 string.
  5. Bow both open strings again at your normal practice volume.
Help and explanations

The two open notes also match the middle strings of a violin. Setting them establishes your starting pitches, but the erhu has no fingerboard to fix stopped notes. Check open-string tuning before trying to correct a fingering problem by moving a peg.

A change of key is not automatically a change of tuning

The same D4 and A4 strings can be used in different musical keys. In numbered notation, a new key changes what the numbers mean; it does not by itself order you to retune the open strings. Look for an explicit tuning instruction. If a piece uses different open pitches, check the instrument and string requirements before following them.

For Erquan Yingyue, an Erquan erhu may use a lower G–D tuning with a suitable string set. Eason Music’s setup explanation describes why simply slackening normal D–A strings can give poor tone and unstable pitch. This page’s preset remains standard D4–A4; use the chromatic display for a specialist setup guided by your teacher. If a reading wanders, try a slower, even bow stroke and keep the fingers away from the string before making another peg adjustment.

Tips

  • Keep the inner and outer labels in mind when reaching for a peg.
  • Avoid vibrato during the measurement; it intentionally moves the pitch.
  • If open notes are stable but fingered notes miss, check finger position before retuning.

Frequently asked questions

What are the erhu’s inner and outer string notes?

Inner D4 and outer A4. At A440, their equal-tempered frequencies are about 293.66 Hz and 440 Hz.

Should I tune my erhu to 440 or 442 Hz?

Use the same reference as the instruments or recording you play with. This page opens at A440 and lets you change the reference.

Do I retune the erhu for a piece in G major?

Usually, changing the key means using different finger positions and numbered-note meanings. Retune only when the score or teacher specifies different open strings.

Can I tune by plucking instead of bowing?

Plucking can help identify a pitch, but finish by checking a steady open bow stroke, since that is how you normally play.

Can ordinary erhu strings be tuned down for Erquan Yingyue?

A large drop can leave them too loose. A specialist Erquan setup uses appropriate strings; consult the maker or teacher before changing.

Why is the tuner steady on open notes but unstable on fingered notes?

Finger pressure, placement and vibrato affect stopped pitch. First verify the open D and A, then work on those playing variables.
