Trombone tuner online
A trombone bass-clef C3 sounds C3: 130.81 Hz at A4 = 440 Hz. This tuner opens in C, so the displayed note is the pitch you hear rather than a transposed name.
Written notes and concert pitch
This trombone tuner reads concert pitch: C3 → C3 (130.81 Hz) at A4 = 440 Hz. The C preset displays sounding notes without transposition.
| Written note | Sounding note | Frequency (Hz) |
|---|---|---|
| C3 | C3 | 130.81 |
| D3 | D3 | 146.83 |
| E3 | E3 | 164.81 |
| F3 | F3 | 174.61 |
| G3 | G3 | 196.00 |
| A3 | A3 | 220.00 |
| B3 | B3 | 246.94 |
How to use it
- Allow microphone access and match the A reference used by your ensemble.
- Warm the trombone, then play a comfortable sustained note without vibrato.
- Let the attack settle; push the tuning slide in if flat or pull it out if sharp.
- Play again without changing your embouchure to chase the needle.
- Check other partials and positions, using the playing slide for individual notes.
Help and explanations
Most orchestral and concert-band trombone parts use concert pitch. The instrument being described as a B♭ trombone does not mean you should select B♭ for an ordinary bass-clef part. British brass-band treble-clef notation is a separate case.
Set the overall pitch, then check slide positions
Warm the instrument before changing the main tuning slide. Sustain an easy note at your normal playing volume and wait until the attack has passed. If several notes are flat, shorten the tubing by pushing the tuning slide in; if they are sharp, pull it out a little. Retest with the same embouchure instead of bending the note to make the needle look right.
The playing slide handles small changes between notes. Seven named positions are a starting map, not seven immovable spots: different partials and the harmony around you can need slightly different positions. Check a short sequence across more than one partial. If you use an F attachment, test that tubing separately as well.
Tips
- Keep vibrato out of the measurement, then restore it for musical playing.
- On low notes, confirm the octave number before reacting to the needle.
- Use your ear to blend with the band after setting the reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is a B♭ trombone a transposing instrument?
Ordinary bass-clef trombone music is written at concert pitch. B♭ describes the tubing, not a required tuner setting.
Which way do I move the tuning slide if I am flat?
Push the main tuning slide in slightly to raise pitch. Check again after the instrument is warm.
Why is one slide position in tune for one note but not another?
Different partials have different intonation tendencies. Adjust the playing slide for the note rather than treating each position as fixed.
Can I use this with a brass-band treble-clef part?
For a B♭ transposing treble-clef part, select B♭ + octave (+14). That notation is a major ninth above the sounding pitch.
Why does the tuner show the wrong octave on a low note?
It may have detected a stronger overtone. Sustain a clear note and check the frequency and octave together.
