Paste the link to a YouTube video, press play and sing along with YouTube while a vocal pitch monitor runs next to the video: the note coming out of your voice, the cents and a pitch line covering the last 8 seconds. You can see whether a long note held steady and whether you really reached the high note in the chorus.

The video plays in the official YouTube player, exactly as it appears on YouTube. Lalatone does not download, record or analyze the video's sound: only your voice, through the microphone, is analyzed, inside your browser. Want the words on screen? Paste a karaoke or lyric video from YouTube itself.

How to use it

  1. Tap Turn on microphone and allow access.
  2. On YouTube, tap Share › Copy link and paste it into the box. Links from youtube.com, youtu.be, Shorts and YouTube Music all work.
  3. Put on headphones, press play and sing along.
  4. Watch the needle and the pitch line: a green dot means you're centered on the note, yellow means you're between two notes. −10 s repeats the passage and 0.75× slows the song down without changing the key.

Why wear headphones

Without headphones, the mic hears your speakers along with you, and the reading jumps between your voice and the singer in the video. Wired headphones are ideal; Bluetooth delays the sound a little but doesn't affect the pitch reading. No headphones at hand? Turn the video down and sing close to the mic.

How to find songs in your key

Find your range with the vocal range test. Then sing the chorus and check range sung: if the highest note hits your limit, search YouTube for the same song as a “lower key” karaoke, a “female key” or “male key” version, or with the key in the title (“in G”, “in D”). Two to four semitones lower usually does the trick.

To find the key of a video, play the guide note and change it until it sounds like “home” at the end of the song: the last note is almost always the tonic.

What this page doesn't do

It shows no lyrics, gives no score at the end like a karaoke machine, doesn't download or extract the video's audio and doesn't record your voice. The video follows YouTube's own rules and ads, and videos whose owners block playback outside YouTube won't open here.

Tips

  • Sing about 8 inches (20 cm) from the mic, a little louder than the video in your headphones.
  • Long notes on open vowels (“ah”, “oh”) show your pitch most clearly.
  • Tricky passage: hit −10 s a few times at 0.75×, then go back to 1×.
  • If everything leans yellow to the same side, the recording may not be tuned to A440: change the Reference A.

Frequently asked questions

Does it show lyrics?

No. To read the words while you sing, paste a karaoke or lyric video from YouTube itself: the lyrics you see are part of that video.

Does it give a score at the end, like a karaoke or videoke machine?

No. The page shows your pitch live but doesn't score you: comparing your voice with the melody would mean analyzing the video's audio, and that isn't done here. To practice for points, play the pitch matching game.

Can I sing along with any YouTube video?

Almost any. Some owners, mostly record labels, don't allow their videos to play outside YouTube; you'll see a notice, and you can just look for another version (karaoke, live, cover).

Do I need to download the song?

No. Nothing is downloaded or converted: the video streams in YouTube's official player and only your microphone is analyzed.

Is my voice recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The microphone is analyzed in your browser and nothing is recorded. The YouTube player only loads after you paste a link, in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com); once you press play, YouTube's own terms apply.

Why does a note show up when I'm not singing?

The mic is hearing the video through your speakers. Use headphones or turn the volume down.

Does 0.75× change the key?

No. YouTube slows the video down while keeping the pitch, so the notes stay the same.
