Backing track in headphones (optional)

Choose a song from your device to play in your headphones while you sing. Use headphones and start with the volume low.

Notes are compared with the nearest semitone based on the chosen A. If you sing without a backing track, compensating the overall tuning makes the ruler follow your own center.

Voice Recorder Online for Singing

A voice recorder made for singers. It records like any online voice recorder, but when you stop, it shows the notes you sang under the waveform and marks in yellow and pink the passages that drifted off the semitone. You can play just those bits, re-record and compare takes.

How to use it

  1. Tap Turn on microphone, sing a little and check the level bar: it should stay green, touching yellow only on the loud parts.
  2. To sing along with music, open Backing track in headphones and pick an audio file from your device. Use headphones so the music doesn't leak into the microphone.
  3. Tap Record, sing and tap Stop. With a backing track, the recording stops on its own when the song ends.
  4. Read the curve: green is in tune, yellow is close, pink is off. Tap an item under Passages to review to hear that bit.
  5. Trim the start and end, choose reverb and echo, listen and download. On a phone, Share opens WhatsApp, Messages and your other apps.
Help and explanations

The recording stays in your browser's memory: nothing goes to a server. You download it as WAV (top quality) or in the browser's compact format (WEBM, OGG or M4A), with or without reverb, echo and trimming.

How to read the pitch curve

The colored line is the pitch of your voice over time, on a grid of semitones. Each note held for more than a tenth of a second gets a light bar on the nearest semitone and is measured in cents: up to 25 cents is in tune (green), 25 to 40 is close (yellow), and beyond that it is off (pink). Transitions between notes appear in lilac and don't count.

Vibrato doesn't get in the way: the measurement averages about 0.2 s, roughly one vibrato cycle. The tendency tells you whether, overall, you sang above or below the center of the notes.

Backing track and effects

The backing track plays in your headphones while the microphone records only your voice; when you stop, you decide whether the music goes into the file. The delay between what you hear and what the microphone picks up is compensated automatically; with Bluetooth headphones, fine-tune it with the sync adjustment.

Reverb simulates a room, a stage or a large hall, echo repeats your voice at the time you choose, and Normalize brings the peak to −1 dB, the loudest it can go without distorting. The original recording doesn't change: you can go back and download again.

Tips

  • Stay about 8 inches (20 cm) from the microphone and sing slightly past it: the pops on P and B disappear.
  • Seeing Too loud? Move the phone away. Clipped audio can't be fixed afterward.
  • A room with curtains, a couch or a closet full of clothes makes the sound dry, and the recorder's reverb sounds better on it.
  • Record several takes and compare the percentage of in-tune notes in each before downloading.
  • To practice a note live before recording, use the voice tuner with a guide note.

Frequently asked questions

Is the audio I record sent to a server?

No. Recording, analysis and effects all happen in your browser. The audio stays in the page's memory until you download or share it; when you close the tab, it is gone.

Can I download it as MP3?

Browsers don't record MP3. You get WAV, which opens in any program, and the browser's compact format: WEBM or OGG (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Android) and M4A (iPhone). WhatsApp and audio editors open all of them.

WAV or compact file?

WAV for editing or mixing in another program: it loses nothing, but takes about 5.8 MB per minute. The compact file is around 1 MB per minute and is the best choice for sending in a message.

Why does a note show as off-pitch when I sang it right?

Each note is compared with the nearest semitone based on the reference A (440 Hz). If you sang without a backing track and your whole pitch drifted, check Compensate overall tuning under Pitch analysis. Noise or music leaking into the microphone also confuses the reading.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Keep the screen on while recording: if you switch apps, the system pauses the microphone.

How long can I record?

Up to 10 minutes per take. The latest takes of the session (about 15 minutes in total) are kept for comparison; download the ones you want to keep before closing the page.

Can I add autotune?

No. The recorder shows where your pitch slipped so you can re-record that part, but it doesn't correct your voice. To practice the notes that drifted, use the pitch matching game.
